Humalog is a medication prescribed for managing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It reduces blood sugar through various mechanisms, such as aiding specific tissues in the body to store glucose within their cells, inhibiting the liver's production of glucose, preventing the breakdown of fats and proteins, and regulating the overall synthesis and degradation of sugar in the body.
You should not use Humalog if you have an allergy to Humalog or any of its inactive components, or if your blood sugar is currently very low. Additionally, sharing your insulin with others is never advisable.
Consult your doctor about Humalog if you experience low blood sugar, possess low potassium levels, have issues with your kidneys or liver, suffer from heart failure, or if you are using thiazolidinediones (TZDs). While some insulin products can be combined, Humalog should not be mixed with others.
Do not mix Humalog with any other types of insulin, even if you are using a Humalog formulation that is pre-mixed.
Inform your doctor if any of the following side effects become severe or persistent: nose or throat infections, increased susceptibility to flu-like symptoms, headaches, pain or irritation, particularly at the injection site, formation of fatty tissue at the injection site, itching, rash, joint pain, weight gain, and swelling in the feet, ankles, and lower legs.
Discontinue this medication and contact your doctor if you encounter any serious side effects such as low blood sugar, low potassium levels, or severe and/or life-threatening allergic reactions.
Be sure to inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter drugs, illegal substances, recreational drugs, herbal supplements, and nutritional or dietary products.
Humalog has interactions with many medications, such as: beta blockers; drugs containing liraglutide and repaglinide; estrogen-containing medications and hormone replacement therapies; sulfonylureas and medications that include glipizide; other diabetes medications; and psychiatric drugs.
It is advisable to avoid or restrict alcohol consumption while using Humalog.
